Medicare is the federal health insurance program for adults who are 65 & older or a select group of younger people with disabilities. There are some big differences between Original Medicare, Medicare Supplement (Medigap), and Medicare Advantage plans.
Original Medicare has 3 separate parts which cover specific services:
Part A is your “Hospital Insurance” which covers inpatient hospital stays, care in a skilled nursing facility, hospice care, and some home health care.
Part B is your “Medical Insurance” which covers certain doctors’ services, outpatient care, medical supplies, and preventive services.
Part D is your “Prescription Drug Coverage” and is insurance for your medication needs.
Medicare Advantage (also known as “Part C”) is an “all in one” alternative to Original Medicare. These “bundles” plans include Part A, Part B, and usually Part D. They also may offer extra benefits Original Medicare doesn’t cover.
Medigap or Medicare Supplement policy is an insurance policy that helps supplement Original Medicare ad can help pay some of the remaining healthcare costs that Original Medicare doesn’t pay for like supplies, co-payments, coinsurance and deductibles.
