Common Causes of Car Accidents

Driving accidents happen every minute of every day. An estimated 10 million people are involved in car accidents every year. Car accidents are also the leading cause of teenage deaths. The story is always the same, it’s not my fault. Several studies from the U.S. say the number one cause of accidents is you, not a wet road or a pothole. Accidents can happen for almost any reason. Let’s talk about the most common causes of car accidents.

Distraction:

The number one cause of car accidents is a distraction while driving. This includes talking on the phone, texting, eating, or slapping the mosquito on the windshield. It also includes having a conversation with your passenger. You are 23 times more likely to get in an accident if you are texting while driving and 4 times more likely if you use a handheld device. Pay attention to your surroundings, especially if you are in a busy city but rural accidents are possible as well.

Speeding:

Most everyone today has a need for speed at one point or another. A third of all accidents in the U.S. are caused by speeding drivers. Give yourself enough time to make it from point A to point B. Ask yourself this; is 10 minutes worth your life?

Drunk Driving:

Drunk driving is the most dangerous act on the road today. Mothers Against Drunk Drivers estimate that 300,000 incidents of drunk drivers happen daily. Drunk driving is completely preventable; you could call a taxi or a friend for a ride. Drunk driving not only endangers your life but others as well.

These are only three causes of car accidents, there are too many to count. While driving on the road an accident can happen at anytime and anywhere, know your surroundings where ever you drive. If you have any questions or are in need of auto insurance contact us today!
